"Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze."
Country roads take me home, to the place I belong ..... Always and forever one of my very favorite songs by John Denver.
West Virginia is one of our 'younger' states, #35 to join the Union, born out of that very desire - to join the Union during the Civil War. Until then, West Virginia was part of Virginia and Virginia had seceded.
We drove through Harpers Ferry on our way to Antietam National Battlefield in 2008.
During that same trip we also drove through the coal mining areas of southern West Virginia.
Last fall, after leaving Gettysburg and starting home, we overnighted in Morgantown. Lots of beautiful scenery in this area, but very few photos and none of them too good.
From Morgantown we drove North back into Pennsylvania's west edge and then back into West Virginia and across that funny little bit that sticks up between PA and Ohio. Once we crossed the Ohio River at Wheeling, we were really headed home.
"Take me home, country roads."
