A Month of Celebrating!!

It used to be, "Thanksgiving's over, time to start thinking about Christmas." Now the Christmas push starts even before Halloween is over! Lest you think I am really rushing things with my 'Happy Holidays', let me explain my Month of Celebrating title. We have so many birthdays and anniversaries this month that I have long said, "I can't even think about Christmas until we get through November."
My daughter poetically said the same thing on Facebook this morning. I'm trusting she won't mind if I borrow her lines: "Remember, remember the dates of November, the birthdays of family and friends! Best wishes and more to over a score before this crazy month ends!" Of course she is paraphrasing some of the lines from the Guy Fawkes Day ditty. I love her version.

I'm starting with a picture of my Great-grandfather, George Robert Means, born November 8, 1853 because some of my regular blog readers like seeing old family photographs. From left to right: Lloyd Perryman, Orphas Means, Drothel Means Perryman, Joseph Ridnour, George Means, Delphia Means Ridnour, Matilda Lippincott Means, Howard Roberts (partially hidden) Evelyn Ridnour Roberts, holding her son, Glen, Lois Ridnour Mitchell, holding her nephew, Larry Roberts and Ruth Ridnour Lynam.
Orphas and Drothel were brother and sister to my Grandma Delphia,  the children of George and Matilda Means. Great-grandpa Means died the year before I was born and a month after his 89th birthday, December 8, 1942. This picture was taken in 1939.

Also on November 8, my mother-in-law, Lottie Nelson Schaffer, who died last year two weeks after her 91st birthday. Bud took her to see the 'Bonnie and Clyde' car, complete with bullet holes, when it was on display at a near-by casino a few years ago. Lottie remembered seeing it for the first time some sixty years earlier when it was on display at the county fair.

Bud's sister Diane's birthday is also November 8. She was born on her mother's 23rd birthday in 1943. This picture was taken at our Christmas Eve dinner in 2006.

Celebrating her birthday on November 10 is my daughter-in-law, Shalea Fleming. The two of us have celebrated many birthdays together over the years - often meeting for lunch.

Every two days, another birthday! My new son-in-law, Ken, was born on November 12. I took this picture of him and Kari several years ago at our official "Mom, this is my boyfriend" meeting. Ken was performing at an Irish pub in Omaha and I went to listen to him play and sing - and be introduced to him, of course.

November 14 is the birthday of my terrific step-son, Mark Schaffer. I usually just refer to him as my son, because he has become that to me. But for clarity, I will say step-son this time. Mark will be 38 this year! OMG! How is that possible? He was only six the first time we met.

Granddaughter Dominique Fleming's birthday is November 15. Her golden birthday was last year which means she will be 16 in two weeks. I took this photo of her after her cross country meet here in Creston in September.

Dominique was so excited when our great-grandson Rodney Loney was born because he arrived on her birthday. If you want time to pass quickly, have a great grandchild. He has grown up so fast! His third birthday is two weeks from today.

On my 51st birthday I received the best ever present - a new granddaughter, Deise Fleming. This year will be her golden birthday - 18 on the 18th. She loves modeling and the camera loves her.

Just for fun here is a picture Ken took of me at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival four years ago. I was cold so he loaned me his leather tunic. He has this pic labeled "Mum-out-law" on his Facebook page. Oh, yeah, I will be sixty-nine on November 18. Talk about OMG!

My wonderful hubby's birthday is November 20. Even at the tender age of two (?), he was a hot-rodder. Bud is pictured here with his sister Diane and grandfather Albin Nelson. (Check out Bud's hat. Wasn't he a cutie?)

My aunt Evelyn's birthday was November 28. She was two years older than my mother, Ruth. Here they are shown holding a quilt which had been pieced by their grandmother, Matilda Means. Mom had had the pieced top forever. Finally I suggested she have her sister Evelyn (left) quilt it for her, which she did in 1996. At that time the quilt top was way over fifty years old, but still in perfect condition. Aunt Evelyn died June 1, 2000.

My grandfather George A. Lynam was born November 29, 1891. This picture of him and my Grandma Bessie was taken in 1940 when their first grandson, my brother Ronald was a baby.

Hopefully I haven't forgotten anyone's birthday in my listing. Now, on to the anniversaries:
Older brother Ronald and wife, Marge, will celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary Sunday, November 4.

Younger brother Les and wife Susan will be celebrating their third anniversary on November 7.

Grandpa George and Grandma Bessie's anniversary was November 15. They were married in 1914. Love, love, love this photograph of them. They were both 23 when they married. Well, almost, Grandpa was two weeks shy of being twenty-three.

Last, but not least, a picture of Bud and me on our wedding day, November 19, 1985. We tied our birthdays together with an anniversary in between. Seemed like the natural thing to do, especially for two people crazy enough to get married outside, in November, in a snowstorm! Twenty-seven great years for us this year. On to the month of celebrating.......!
